I recently have tried to learn the basics of cloud computing. Technology
has not always been easy for me. I have two strikes against me, I
didn't grow up with computers and I am a woman. Enough said? I have an
iPad, a Kindle, a Smartphone and a laptop that are all amazingly tied
together. How are they connected to each other? How are these small
pieces of technology able to function as my desk top computer? Somehow
all of takes place in the cloud.
Definition
Cloud computing is a model for delivering information technology services in which resources are retrieved from the internet through web-based tools and applications. Data and software packages are stored in servers. Cloud computing allows access to information as long as an electronic device has access to the web. It is named because the user does not have to be in any special location as the information is found in the clouds.
The Cloud In My Life
Here are some of the ways that I use cloud technology and didn't know I was using it. I have a Kindle e-reader from Amazon. All the books that I have on my Kindle are not stored in the Kindle. They are stored in the cloud on the Amazon network. I can access them as long as I am hooked up to the internet and have the Kindle application. So I can read my books on my Kindle and on my iPad. If I break or lose my e-reader my books are still intact because my library is in the cloud.
Do you have a million photos stored in your desktop? I do. Have you ever had your computer crash? If you upload your photos to the cloud they will always be there for you to look at or share with others. I was uploading my photos to AOL pictures years ago. Now there are many photo sites such as Snapfish or Shutterfly that you can store your photos on. It's like having a safety deposit box at your fingertips.
SaaS is another cloud computing solution. This is referring to software as a service. Instead of purchasing a piece of software, you can pay for what you use of it. Google Apps falls into this category. Although some of the services are free of charge such as Gmail, they are found in the cloud.

Now when you hear someone speak of cloud computing you might be able to
join in the conversation. May this encourage someone to look further
into the technology? The more you use technology the less challenged you
will become.
